A handful of great discoveries was recently made at the archive of the
Nederlands Filmmuseum, Amsterdam. In the
course of the year 2000, films arrived at the Museum from a
collector, who had kept them in very questionable circumstances
for some decades. Elif Rongen from the film collection department
contacted me via internet sending me her descriptions of the surviving
plots so that I could identify the footage. Some of the films are
known to be extant, although only one or
two copies seem to be left worldwide. Most notably figure
Between the Acts (Zigoto in het Variete) and
Romans and Rascals (Zigoto als Julius Caesar) among
them. The salient discoveries will be
presented in the following, summarising the scenes that
have survived, omitting those that are still missing.
